Armenia welcomes Russia in Euro 2012 qualification

Category : Europa League News, John Davies, Uncategorized

In the eagerly awaited return to Euro 2012 qualification, Russia travels to Yerevan to face surging Armenia.

When the pre-tournament draw pulled Armenia in with Russia, few expected much more than a standard performance by a relative minnow in the football world but since the start of competition the tide has turned measurably. Under manager Vardan Minasyan, Armenia has flourished with a youthful attack frenzy approach that has defied all odds and sits two points off Russia in the hotly contested Group B.

For Russia, despite leading the group, general reviews of qualification play is far from dazzling. A modest win over Andorra was followed up with stoic performance against Slovakia that resulted in a 1-0 loss before an uplifting victory over Northern Ireland and squeezing past Macedonia. This inconsistent play is reason for concern for not on Saturday’s contest but looking well ahead to the summer of 2012.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen slaughters crumbling VfL Wolfsburg

Category : Europa League News, John Davies

Stefan KießlingBayer 04 Leverkusen extended its chase of runaway Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund with a 3-0 beat down of free falling VfL Wolfsburg. With the result, Werkself pushes two points ahead of third place Hannover 96 as the race for a Champions League berth goes into top gear, whilst Wolfsburg is in the thick of the relegation battle at the fourteenth spot.

Coming off their disappointing loss to Werder Bremen, Bayer 04 were far from steady in the opening stages. Shy of the quarter-hour, Sascha Riether was in prime territory to give Wolfsburg a rare lead but he was unable to make use of Cicero fine cross. Following that foray by the visitors, Werkself found its attacking vision as the highly promising Lars Bender latched onto Sidney Sam’s deft provision and from the edge of the area on the right, drilled the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead at the twenty-first minute. The hosts continued to dominant and after Diego Benaglio halted Gonzalo Castro’’s effort, the margin was doubled a minute shy of the half-hour as Renato Augusto exposed the visitors on the counter to score from the right side of the area. A minute into added time the match was fait accompli as Stefan Kießling raced onto end of chipped pass from Renato Auguto, following another deplorable turnover, with the German international deftly lofting over the sprawling ‘keeper to give Bayer 04 the three goal advantage after the break.

Borussia Mönchengladbach continue relegation fight with victory over1899 Hoffenheim

Category : Europa League News, John Davies

Marco ReusBorussia Mönchengladbach, under the brilliant guidance of new manager Lucien Favre, continued its fight to avoid relegation as they shook off their problematic play at home this campaign to defeat 1899 Hoffenheim 2-0. With the result, the “Fohlen” pull within three points of Werder Bremen and Kaiserslautern at the bottom of the Bundesliga table, whist 1899 are firmly entrenched at the ninth spot.

Following their disappointing loss to VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia manager Lucien Favre made four adjustments to his starting eleven with the highly promising attacker Tony Jantschke entering along with Michael Fink, Thorben Marx Igor De Camargo for Tobias Levels, Håvard Nordtveit, Mohamadou Idrissou and Patrick Herrmann.

With Borussia-Park in full song, the Fohlen took the pitch with new found confidence and narrowly missed taking the lead at the eighth minute when Juan Arango Igor sent Igoe Camargo’s cross off-course. After Marco Reus sent a probing effort from distrance just wide of the woodwork, Igor de Camargo saw his goal bound effort from five metres spectacularly stopped by the visiting goalkeeper Tom Starke.

Hannover 96 defeat Bayern München

Category : Europa League News, John Davies

Mohammed AbdellaoueHannover 96 extended their assault on a berth on the European stage as they unceremoniously defeated Bayern München 3-1 at the Niedersachsenstadion. With the result, 96, who grappled with near ruin last year push to third spot in the Bundesliga table, whilst Bayern loses their third straight contest and run the risk of being overtaken by Mainz 05 who play on Sunday.

Mirko Slomka’s 96, with a firm vision of a spot in the Champions League came out gunning and took the lead a minute past the quarter hour as Mohammed Abdellaoue half volleyed in Konstantin Rausch’s beaming cross from the left flank into the back of the net. For the balance of the half, the hosts were clearly in charge of the beleagured Bayern but were only able to build upon their lead and had to be satisfied with the one-goal advantage as both sides went to their respective change rooms.
