Sport echoes society and equally has the opportunity to uplift it. Through proper mentoring, athletics should promote character traits that go well past the world of sport and exercise, creating leaders of tomorrow.

While throughout my career in sport, I have been given great respect for the teams that I have helped win championships the most rewarding factor is watching athletes fan out in world and teach the great lessons they learned through athletics. It might surprise many that while I have stood in some of the sporting worlds most hallowed grounds and directed legends the greatest reward is watching young men and women become leaders in their community.

For that I have a litany of private stories of quiet heroes, those who have no need for public accolades or their names in lights but simply knowing they did what is right. Quiet heroes, those who will never see their images on posters or talked of their grand playing days but still they lived following the true test of “strength” by reaching out to their fellow man with the open hand of compassion and making our world a better place.

Heroes come in many sizes, shapes and every walk of life and while they may show it countless ways, like the parent reading to their child, a teacher in front of the classroom and the military past and present protecting our freedoms, each has the common ground of helping those less fortunate. Within each of us there is a burning light of greatness that cannot be vanquished, a hero within that defies physical stature and rises up to heights of a giant.

Whether you know the many in harms way during the recent natural disasters in the United States or have seen the countless images in the news, we must join together to help these wonderful people.

The broad industry of exercise, health and sports conditioning quite obviously spends a great deal of time on “building strength”. That is quite the understatement as and endless aisle of libraries have been filled with approaches of “building strength” in the modern era.

Yet “building strength” is not simply of the load hoisted but of character built and quite honestly as many have attempted to understand the secret of teams that follow my advice, it is most notably that I believe building leaders comes first.

Strength is not merely measured by the weight room but of character and understanding adversity is something we overcome.

With that said, the iron game must always remind itself that when under the heat of adversity, when many are in harms way we must band together to help those less fortunate. In this manner we show strength that builds leaders and in this case, helps rebuild communities.

As many of you aware many in the United States has suffered horrific losses in recent flooding. No words can express sufficient hope for those who have suffered in the recent natural disaster but simply, we the men and women of this modern iron-game must band together as one and offer our open hand to help.
