Georgino Wijnaldum leads Feyenoord over Groningen with four goals

Category : Europa League News, John Davies

In a career moment, Georgino Wijnaldum led Feyenoord to a stunning 5-1 romp over FC Groningen in front of the faithful at De Kuip. The victory extends the undefeated run to four contests for Mario Been’s side, a noteworthy accomplishment after the problematic opening half of the campaign and catapults them to thirteenth in the Eredivisie table, six points about safety, whilst Groningen will rue the missed opportunity as they sit in the fourth spot.

Coming in to the contest, the visitors had their sites keenly set on three points and to make up ground PSV and Ajax with the two clashing in another chapter of the Klassieker today.

Despite troublesome weather conditions, De Kuip was in full song to support the Rotterdammers and it did not take long for their side to take the lead. At the twenty-third minute Diego Biseswar launched a quick counter on the right and after his curling cross from the wing was deflected, Georgino Wijnaldum side footed the ball in from nine metres. Leaping in the sky, the twenty year-old Rotterdam had no idea what lay ahead but a scant eight minutes later he would double the margin in similar predatory fashion. Initiating from teen virtuoso Ryo Miyaichi flanking attack on the left, the effort from the eighteen year-old bounded off goalkeeper Luciano with Georgino Wijnaldum sending it in from the edge of the area. Four minutes shy of the break, the visitors would pull one back as Feyenoord Gill Swerts gave up the ball in a shockingly poor touch in his own are, to which Nicklas Pedersen latched onto the gift and sent a booming effort in from fifteen metres.
