Law Enforcement: the thin blue line, part one

Category : Training, USP Labs

Within the training sector, few occupations have such far off-base exercise approaches in the public as the Law Enforcement sector. While the profession has extraordinary high demands, both mental and physical, with many that put theirs and other lives at stake, parts of the exercise community treat it like its open season to shill product and over-priced ideas.

Law Enforcement requires specialized needs and many commonly accepted exercises measures may not apply and leaves the individual prone to failure. This will upset those who have gotten away with training “LE” as if they are powerlifters, bodybuilders and many other training styles but while costs of unsuccessful training in everyday life means the lack of goal fulfilment, the repercussions with law enforcement is severe. While I prefer not to be so glaring in a public setting, this situation warrants it, as an error in physical training for law enforcement may cost a person their life. Given this, only seasoned professionals, who understand the stark reality of the job, must administer training for “LE”.

Step one in Law Enforcement training understands you are going home tonight and every night. Quite obviously, I mean that with enormous respect but my job is getting you home to your loved ones safe, while doing your job to the best of your ability. Survivability is the over riding theme to all law enforcement preparation as the individual must be able to manage rapidly changing situations and be able to make decisions on the spot and not be distracted with the rush of adrenaline that is inherent to the job.

The Plan

Category : John Davies, Training, USP Labs

Though obvious and repeated endlessly in the media, the general fitness levels of the mainstream are horrible. I make no light of this situation but the costs both personally as well as a financial expense to society are enormous to say the least. If matters are not reversed nation’s financial futures will be crippled by an unhealthy work force and resulting health care costs. While I prefer not to put such a financial tone to matters of health, the grim reality is the cost is enormous to business and a nation’s fortune.

Yet the solutions are not so easy. Amongst a myriad of problems, including the availability of quality food, its affordability, environmental issues, work place environments and passive activity, obesity and its health related issues is not dealt with equally amongst the classes. That is likely a deeply controversial point for some but this inequity must be dealt or the broad problem cannot be solved. Let me state emphatically, this is not a political point but the tools for a more proactive approach to reducing obesity and its health related issues must be balanced throughout society.

Naturally, there will be issues that go beyond the abilities of simple management and require concerted efforts from the public and private sectors working together. Many of these problems deal with food production and environmental issues are both an in-depth challenge and beyond the scope of this review, however should be considered. This is of-course an enormous challenge because food costs are rapidly increasing, quality and availability dropping, virtually pushing poor food habits on those unable to afford healthier options. Yet one thing that can be done, with modest ease, is implementing exercise regimes within the work place.

As revealing as it may be, I personally believe in “Stanislavski system” that insists that within acting, in the most simplest of terms, the individual envelopes the role and “becomes” the character. In essence, if you do not understand the situation first-hand, how can you make suggestions? How can you suggest an exercise regime for those in the factory line where repetitive stress injuries are common when only looking at it superficially? It is impossible and the only way to solve the problem is to roll the sleeves up and dig in.

With this in mind, I undertook a very serious and secret mission roughly one year ago. Toiling in the fields and the factory lines, I took time to understand the grind and get a better glimpse of the needs.

Chess is a tactical game played squared board with sixty-four squares with eight by eight dimensions. Each faction has sixteen pieces, a King and Queen, two knights, bishops and rooks each with eight pawns. The goal of the game is to capture the oppositions King or to place in “checkmate”, whereby it cannot move out of position from being captured in the ensuing move.

Each faction has sixteen pieces, a King and Queen, two knights, bishops and rooks each with eight pawns. The goal of the game is to capture the oppositions King or to place in “checkmate”, whereby it cannot move out of position from being captured in the ensuing move.

The game dates back to the sixteenth century, with quite obvious origins to mimic a nation’s court or monarchy. Its structured play lends to extraordinary tactical decisions, mimicking battle but serves as a tremendous cognitive tool. Chess is not only an entertaining pastime but has direct application for young students in developing for reaching both right and left brained thought, business people and athletes building their tactical work processes but as an anti-aging tool.

From our vision of “zwischenzug” or creating the oppositions move by our own, we are looking at the central processes of developing the tactical mind. Whether it is business schools, athletics or many other areas, this attribute is one of the most complex to develop and easily missed out within the educational systems due to funding limitations.
